HOW IT BEGAN
It had been a difficult task for the parents
of the children who seek
admission to preliminary Classes for both leading Buddhist
Schools namely Maliyadewa Boys' and Girls' in Kurunegala town,
towards late nineteen seventeen.Hence, the school has been
established in 1978 February 27th with two intentions. The first
being to evade the tag pressure caused to educate children
in preliminary classes in both Maliyadewa Boys' and Girls'
Schools in Kurunegala town.
The second being to continue this school as the feeding
of both Maliyadewas with those succeeds at the grade five
scholarship examination. These two reasons have been
the very reason to name this school as  Maliyadewa primary
model school. But as these intentions were not materialized
the school had to continue classes up to junior and senior levels.
It was under the patronage of late Mr. Piyadasa
Wijesinghe Honorable Minister of Parliament for Kurunegala. The
piece of land acres rods purchase in extent has been taken
during 70-78 region of late Mrs. Sirimawo Bandaranayaka, the
honorable prime minister of ceylon and the honorable minister for
Kurunegala Mr.D.B.welegedara. First building 25’ * 240 wide has
been built  to start the school during 78-83.The first principal
appointed to this school was Mr. T.A. Sriwardhana and the
tutorial staff was Mrs. Fonseka, Mrs weerakoon, Mrs. Indra
Thilakarathne, Mrs.Kamala Piyaseeli, Mrs P. A. Seelawathi and
miss Chandrakanthi Gunawardhana. The first student admitted to
the school appears to be as Raween
Manjula Gunawardana and S.R.M. Nirmala Kumari. The school
commenced with preliminary classes and 3 grade one classes as
the first single storied building put up was not sufficient for more than
6 classes. As the number of students have increased annually the
building and the other facilities had to be improved with the
aid of government, well wishes, the staff and parents of the
school. Among the well wishes the most prominent character
had been Mr. B.G.D. Fernando the divisional director of Education in
Kurunegala.Others have been Mr. D.B. Dissanayake, Late Mr. Hewawasam
the principals of both maliyadewas, the principal, teachers and parents
of the school in the vicinity of Kurunegala town.Few months after the opening
of the school there spread a good news about the quick and vast progress
of D.S. Senanayake M.V. in Colombo achieved within a short period of time
like 6 years and that has been subjected for the discussion among the most
of the officers and the scholars Island wide.
Mr. B.G.D. Fernando the district director of eduction in Kurunegala
on hearing this news has taken the principal and the staff of maliyadewa
model school to D.S. Senanayake M.V. in Colombo for them
to find out the process the principal Mr.A.F.Alias has adopted.Again
they have been given opportunities to listen to the lecturers given
there at the curriculum centre in Colombo. On
their return they all got together and prepared a scheme of work
in that scheme and the top priority had been given to shramadana campaign.
Hence all effort have been made to obtain the assistance of well wishes,
teachers, pupils and parents in the Kurunegala in a large scale with
various sources to developed the school. After
continuing sharamadana for some time they were able to
realize the good result gained through it and they resumed
the work on a wider scale with out leaving room to cause any
damage to the routine of those who took part in sharamadana campaign.
In the mean time arrangements were made to hold sharamadana in
every weekend. As a result there had been great influence among
all who took part and the school has developed to this level. Today
not only with the aid of the government but with the aid of well wishers,
teachers, parents, pupils and so many others right around Kurunegala town.
By the beginning of next year (1979) this school had set an example to
all other schools in Kurunegala by welcoming all the new students with
a bouque of flowers to  each of them. They have been presented a toy
by the class teachers while parents had treated all of them with milk rice
and oil cakes, and plantains.
